Is Alignerr legit?

Researched October 2026 · 16 sources

Yes. Alignerr is the expert network of Labelbox, a San Francisco AI data company that raised over $100 million in October 2026, and it pays weekly through Stripe or PayPal. On per-task projects only accepted work is paid, and workers report unreviewed tasks, sudden removals and deactivations that left completed work unpaid, with support that rarely answers. It pays $35–$130/hr typically (median $60/hr).

Actively hiring, pay independently measured from its live feed
Who is behind it

Alignerr is powered by Labelbox, a San Francisco AI data company founded in 2018 and led by co-founder and CEO Manu Sharma; its experts work inside Labelbox's labeling platform. Labelbox raised $110 million in a SoftBank-led Series D in January 2022 and announced over $100 million in Series E financing on October 14, 2026, saying it turned profitable in 2026. In February 2026 it said Alignerr had over 1 million domain experts.

Getting paid

Each Monday-to-Sunday week is paid by the following Friday through the one provider Alignerr enables in your country (Stripe or PayPal; Upwork hires are paid by Upwork), and Stripe holds the first payout 7 days. Projects pay per hour, per task or per turn; on per-task work only tasks that pass review and are accepted are paid.

Worker ratings

Trustpilot 4.5/5 (2,968 reviews). Read October 2026.

Verified active

394 open roles on Alignerr, independently checked 18 Oct 2026.

Who can join

Global, remote-first; roles region-targeted (US, UK, EU, Australia, Singapore, Brazil, Philippines).

Fake Alignerr recruiters

No Alignerr-specific impersonation cases turned up. Real applications start at app.alignerr.com, support is support@alignerr.com, and payouts are connected only after you are assigned to a project, through Stripe or PayPal. Fake recruiters usually start on text, WhatsApp or Telegram and later ask you to pay; never pay to get a job.

What people praise

  • Recent reviewers often praise the Zara AI interview as natural and tailored to their background.
  • Some workers on Reddit report steady pay, including earnings in the thousands and weeks of payments on time.
  • Rates are posted per role: $20 to $50 an hour for generalist task authoring and $60 to $120 for roles that need a profession (read July 2026).

What people complain about

  • Unreviewed work earns nothing: Annotation Academy found 25 Reddit accounts in 18 threads (2024-2026) describing unpaid or never-reviewed tasks.
  • Reviewers say accounts were removed or deactivated, sometimes right after ID verification, with no reason given.
  • Many say they waited weeks or months after onboarding without a single project.
  • The Better Business Bureau rates Alignerr F (not accredited), with 8 complaints filed in the last 3 years.

What has gone wrong

  • September 2026. Trustpilot reviewers from July to September 2026 said cancelled or rejected work went unpaid: one says Alignerr owes $2,250 after a project was cancelled, another $9,000, and others say support stopped answering. Alignerr has replied to none of its negative Trustpilot reviews.
  • May 2026. Workers on a paused Alignerr project published an open letter in May 2026 about tasks that were never reviewed or paid. Its author later edited the post to say the tasks were reviewed and paid once workers organised; Annotation Academy calls it one documented case, not a reliable remedy.
  • August 2025. Business Insider reported in August 2025 that contractors hired through Alignerr and Outlier to review chats with Meta's AI often saw users' unredacted personal data, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, selfies and explicit photos.
Who it suits

Best for: Specialists with degrees or professional experience (coding, STEM, finance, languages) who want weekly-paid project work and can ride out gaps between projects. Not for: Anyone who needs steady hours, or who cannot afford to lose pay when per-task work is rejected or never reviewed.

How to get started on Alignerr

Researched October 2026

Sign in at app.alignerr.com with Google, let your resume fill in your profile, apply to roles that fit your expertise (some add a skills assessment, a voice sample or a Zara AI video interview), then once you are matched to a project verify your ID with Persona, accept the contract, connect Stripe or PayPal and join the project's Discord; approved work is paid every week.

Who can join

  • A Google account (you sign in with Google), your resume, your LinkedIn profile and a phone number. Onboarding works on a computer (Chrome recommended) or a phone.
  • A laptop or desktop with a working webcam for the Zara AI interview. Phones and tablets cause technical issues, and an interview with the camera disabled is marked Failed.
  • Living where Alignerr operates. For legal, regulatory and security reasons access is limited in some countries, and people there see a 'Location Denied' message and cannot onboard. Alignerr does not publish the list.
  • Once you are matched to a project: a driver's license, state ID, work permit or permanent residence card from an accepted country, photographed live through Persona, plus a recent selfie. Photos of photos are rejected.
  • Real expertise. Alignerr describes its community as subject matter experts, with backgrounds such as master's degrees and PhDs, specialized industry experience or language expertise.
  • A payout account with the one provider Alignerr enables in your identity-verification country, Stripe or PayPal. You cannot choose between them.

Step by step

  1. 1

Sign in with Google and build your profile

Sign up at app.alignerr.com with your Google account and upload your resume. Your profile is filled in from the resume and you can edit it. Have your LinkedIn profile and phone number ready.

  2. 2

Apply to roles that match your expertise

The separate Assessments tab has been removed, so apply for the jobs you want first. Only some roles require an assessment, which you start with the Continue button, and some also ask for a voice sample. 'Completed' means nothing more is needed; 'Applied' means steps may still be pending.

  3. 3

Do the Zara AI interview if it appears

If a Zara interview shows on your dashboard it is required. It is a live dialogue with Alignerr's AI interviewer, with questions unique to you; coding can include live exercises and language interviews are usually a conversation. Some people are also invited to a human interview to check native language skills. If you pass, you move to onboarding automatically.

  4. 4

Wait to be matched to a project

Projects are assigned based on availability and your interview performance. When a project is ready you get a Discord notification with the project details and pay rate, and you decide whether to accept it under 'Go to Projects' in the dashboard.

  5. 5

    Verify your identity with Persona

Alignerr asks for Persona verification only when you are matched with a project or accept a job application: a live photo of your ID plus a selfie. If you submitted the wrong ID, contact support to reset verification.

  6. 6

    Accept the contract

Review and accept your contract from the onboarding checklist on the Alignerr home page, or under Settings, then Documents. US contractors paid through Deel fill in a W-9 during contract signing.

  7. 7

    Connect your payout account

Payment setup opens only once you are officially assigned to a project. Connect Stripe (email, phone code, bank details and currency) or PayPal, whichever your country uses. Once connected, you cannot switch to a different Stripe account.

  8. 8

    Work and get paid weekly

Each Monday-to-Sunday week is processed the next week and paid by the following Friday. Projects pay per hour, per task or per task per turn, at the rate active when you submit; on per-task projects only tasks that pass review and are accepted are paid.

Role assessments and the Zara AI interview

Alignerr screens inside each job application. Some roles ask for a skills assessment, some for a voice sample, and many show a Zara interview: a live dialogue with Alignerr's AI interviewer that checks your knowledge of the role's topic and helps place you on matching projects. If Zara appears on your dashboard it is required; some specializations skip it. Human interviews are used to assess native language proficiency and other skills. Passing moves you to onboarding automatically, and Alignerr gives no individual results, feedback or timelines.

Format

AI video interview on a laptop or desktop with the camera on and the browser in full screen throughout. Questions are unique to each person, so Alignerr publishes no question list or length; coding interviews can include live exercises. Retakes are granted only after technical problems in the first session, and you cannot request extra interviews.

How to prepare

  • Use a laptop or desktop, test your camera and microphone, and make sure your connection is stable: Alignerr says mobile devices are not supported.
  • Choose a quiet room with a neutral background and soft, even light on your face, and use headphones or a noise-cancelling microphone. Alignerr warns that background noise may be read as part of your answer.
  • Do not talk over Zara: Alignerr says overlapping speech causes pauses that can affect your score. Speak at a steady pace and pause briefly after each answer.
  • Work alone. AI tools, extra monitors and anyone helping you on camera are prohibited.
  • Keep your resume specific to your real specialty: Alignerr picks people for human interviews based on the experience they shared at registration.
  • If an NDA or personal limit stops you discussing past work, ask Zara to skip that question.

Why people get rejected

  • Camera off or leaving full-screen mode: a disabled camera is marked Failed.
  • Using outside help, an AI tool or a second monitor.
  • Technical problems from taking the interview on a phone or tablet.
  • Answers that do not follow a project's written guidelines. Some Trustpilot reviewers say answers that did follow them were still rejected and that support would not review assessments.
  • Not actually a rejection: passing does not guarantee a project, and in Reddit reports reviewed by Annotation Academy one worker cleared screening but was never added to a project.
  • Living in a country where Alignerr does not operate, which stops onboarding at a 'Location Denied' message.
How long it takes

Alignerr publishes no timeline. Its onboarding guide says the time it takes can vary, its interview FAQ says individual timelines will not be given, and it contacts you by email and adds you to a Discord channel when a new project is ready.

When you get paid

Each Monday-to-Sunday week of work is processed the next week and paid by the following Friday, through the one provider enabled for your country (Stripe or PayPal; people hired through Upwork are paid by Upwork). Projects pay per hour, per task or per task per turn, at the rate active when you submit. On per-task projects you are paid only for tasks that pass quality review and are accepted; completed tasks that are not accepted are not paid. Changing your payout method means redoing Persona verification.

Tips to get accepted

  • Find out the pay rate before you start: rates are shown only after you are selected, usually on the project page or in its Discord channel, and a few projects in their evaluation phase are unpaid. If the rate is unclear, ask the project coordinator and wait.
  • On per-task projects, see your first tasks accepted before doing many more. Annotation Academy's review of Reddit reports found that work that is never reviewed is never paid.
  • Expect Stripe to hold your first payment for 7 days; Alignerr support cannot shorten it.
  • Set up Discord early and keep notifications on: project alerts, with details and pay rate, arrive there.
  • Expect gaps. Alignerr says its work comes in waves, with periods of waiting followed by intense activity, while it waits on customers for new datasets.
  • Verify with an ID from the country you will be paid in: payout options follow your identity-verification country, and adding another country needs re-verification with that country's documents.

What isn't public

  • Alignerr does not publish the Zara interview's length, how it is scored, a pass mark or an acceptance rate, and it gives no individual results or feedback.
  • It does not publish which countries it operates in, or which countries' ID documents Persona accepts.
  • There is no published timeline from application to first paid task.
  • Which roles require an assessment, a voice sample or an AI interview is only shown once you apply.
  • Pay rates are shown only after you are selected for a project, and Alignerr does not say how many projects have an unpaid evaluation phase or how long it lasts.
  • Its help center says nothing about payout fees, minimum payouts or currency conversion.
  • Glassdoor and Indeed blocked our reading of their Alignerr pages, so worker experience here comes from Trustpilot and Annotation Academy's review of Reddit threads, not our own reading of Reddit.

Does Alignerr pay?

Yes. Legitimate (Labelbox-backed) and pays weekly via Stripe Connect or PayPal, but worker sentiment softened through 2026: reports of retroactive review failures, lost project history, and occasional unpaid work sit alongside praise for onboarding and pay. Treat the smooth start as no guarantee of steady volume. Payouts: Stripe Connect or PayPal by region; direct deposit. Each Monday-to-Sunday week of work is processed the next week and paid by the following Friday, through the one provider enabled for your country (Stripe or PayPal; people hired through Upwork are paid by Upwork). Projects pay per hour, per task or per task per turn, at the rate active when you submit. Is Alignerr worth it?

Alignerr pays $35–$130/hr typically (median $60/hr). It rewards credentialed experts who clear its assessment far more than open generalist work. Worker sentiment: Trustpilot 4.5/5 (2,968 reviews).

How does Alignerr pay out?

Stripe Connect or PayPal by region; direct deposit.

Where can you work for Alignerr?

Global, remote-first; roles region-targeted (US, UK, EU, Australia, Singapore, Brazil, Philippines).

How do I get accepted on Alignerr?

Sign in with Google at app.alignerr.com, upload your resume and apply to roles that match your expertise. Some roles add an assessment, a voice sample or a Zara AI interview. Alignerr then contacts you by email and Discord when a project is ready; at that point you verify your ID, accept the contract and connect your payout account.

Can I retake the Alignerr Zara interview?

Only if your first session failed for technical reasons, such as connectivity or software problems: contact support with the details to ask for a new session. You cannot request extra interviews, and Alignerr does not share individual results.

Why have I not been given a project after onboarding?

Alignerr's work is tied to customer projects and comes in waves, with waiting periods while it waits on customers for new datasets. Being onboarded does not guarantee work; Alignerr says more work becomes available over time.

How and when does Alignerr pay?

Weekly. Each Monday-to-Sunday week is paid by the following Friday through Stripe or PayPal, whichever is enabled for your country. On per-task projects only tasks that pass review and are accepted are paid.

Do I need ID to apply to Alignerr?

Not to apply. Alignerr asks for Persona identity verification only when you are matched with a project or accept a job: a driver's license, state ID, work permit or permanent residence card photographed live, plus a selfie.
