Is Claru legit?

Mostly. Claru is the data business of Reka AI, Inc., a real NVIDIA-backed AI lab, and pays approved work weekly through Trolley. But its worker program is new, rates were cut in September 2026 and some recorders report unpaid work. You are paid only for approved footage, under rules Claru can change: rates and bonuses were cut in September 2026, and if the separate Minute recording app bans you, Claru cannot reverse it and pending videos are never reviewed. It pays $7–$60/hr typically (median $12/hr).

Who is behind it

Claru is the training-data business of Reka AI, Inc., an AI lab founded in 2022 and led by CEO Dani Yogatama. Reka raised $110 million at about a $1 billion valuation in July 2025, backed by NVIDIA and Snowflake, and joined forces with video-AI startup Moonvalley in June 2026. Claru's general manager told The Globe and Mail it grew out of Moonvalley's data operations. Claru says 10,000+ contributors have joined.

Getting paid

Claru pays only approved work, every Tuesday, by bank transfer through Trolley to an account in your own name, once your balance reaches $50; money arrives 1-4 business days later. PayPal, Payoneer and Airtm are not supported, and a returned payment may cost a $10 fee. Its contract allows up to 60 days to pay.

Who can join

Remote. Anyone 18+ can create a profile; each project sets its own countries (video capture covers the US, Canada, Latin America and parts of Asia; some expert roles were EU-only or US-only).

Fake Claru recruiters

No Claru-specific impersonation cases turned up. Claru's real sites are claru.ai and app.claru.ai, its app is published by Reka AI, Inc., and an account is free; Claru pays you, never the reverse. ScamAdviser's automated caution score rests on signals like the young domain and hidden WHOIS owner. Job offers by text or WhatsApp that ask you to pay are scams.

What people praise

  • Claru documents its pay rules in public: the Tuesday pay day, the $50 minimum, what counts as approved work and what to do when a payment fails.
  • Where a project needs a qualification, it is a quiz of about 10 minutes, scored at once, with free and unlimited retakes.
  • Each project states its pay before you record or start work.

What people complain about

  • Reviewers on Brazil's App Store wrote in September 2026 that Claru does not pay; one said she recorded for two weeks, set up her payout account and was still waiting.
  • One reviewer warns that if your account is blocked before your balance reaches the $50 payout minimum, that work is never paid.
  • Claru says Minute app bans are decided by the Minute team; it cannot see the reason or reverse them, and videos pending review at that point will not be reviewed.

What has gone wrong

  • September 2026. On September 9, 2026 Claru changed pay on its Residential Egocentric recording project, ended milestone bonuses (including for hours already recorded) and closed the project in Venezuela. App Store reviewers said the rate fell from $6 to $3.50 an hour; from October 9 the base rate is $5, with boosted tasks up to $10.
  • August 2026. Claru posted on August 4, 2026 that some contributors' videos were stuck in review longer than usual while its review partner investigated. It now asks people not to contact support until a video has been pending for 10 days.
Who it suits

Best for: People in an eligible country with an approved phone who want flexible pay for first-person video of everyday tasks, and experts open to project-based AI evaluation work. Not for: Anyone who needs steady pay or PayPal, or who is uneasy granting a permanent license to footage of their home, body and voice and getting consent from everyone on camera.

How to get started on Claru

Researched October 2026

Create a free profile at app.claru.ai with your true country, verify your email, add your skills and payout details, join a project you are invited to or eligible for (some need a short qualification you can retake), record or annotate to the project's brief, and get paid every Tuesday by bank transfer for approved work once your balance reaches $50.

Who can join

  • Be at least 18, or the age of majority where you live if that is higher, and able to sign a binding contract (Claru's Terms of Service).
  • Live in a country the project accepts. Each project sets its own countries, your profile location decides which projects you can see, and using a VPN or a false country can get your account permanently suspended.
  • For recording projects, a phone on that project's approved list. Each project names exact phone generations (Plus, Pro and Ultra variants count), and newer phones are not accepted automatically; the app blocks recording on an unsupported device.
  • For head-mounted capture projects such as Residential Egocentric in Latin America, a head mount that keeps both hands in view; GoPros and action cameras are not allowed.
  • A bank account in your own name that accepts international transfers. PayPal and Payoneer are not supported; if Claru's payment processor does not cover your country, you can use a US bank account in your name.
  • For expert evaluation roles, real domain experience. The Legal Reasoning AI Response Evaluator role ($55-100/hr), for example, requires at least 3 years of litigation or substantive legal practice.
  • The right to share everything you film: you must hold consent from every identifiable person in your footage (a parent or guardian's consent for minors) and keep records of it for at least 7 years after your last upload.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Create your account

Sign up at app.claru.ai with your correct email address and a secure password. If someone referred you, enter their referral code now: it cannot be added after the account is created.

  2. 2

    Verify your email

If you signed up with an email and password, nothing works until you click the verification link Claru emails you. The link expires after 24 hours; you can send a fresh one from your profile page.

  3. 3

    Complete your profile

Under My Profile, add your true country of residence (and state if you are in the US), up to 10 skills and 10 interests, and your native language. Claru uses these details to match you to projects, your location decides which projects you can see, and your account email cannot be changed later.

  4. 4

Work through the Getting Started checklist

Your dashboard checklist has three steps: a five-slide tour, joining your first project, and adding your payout details. The payout step completes once your payout account is active, which is not always instant.

  5. 5

Find a project you can join

Depending on your country, device and other profile details, you may be invited to projects automatically; public projects are open to anyone but often need a short qualification first. If a project does not appear, the usual reasons are an ineligible country, an incomplete profile, an unsupported phone, a missing assessment or a full project.

  6. 6

Pass the qualification if the project has one

Activities Video and External Video Recording projects are locked until you pass: usually five multiple-choice questions and about 10 minutes, plus a short sample video for some projects. It is scored automatically, retakes are free and unlimited, and a pass keeps that project type unlocked.

  7. 7

Set up the recording app if the project uses one

Some video projects record in the separate Minute app. Since October 12, 2026 you sign in to Minute with the email and password shown on your Claru project page, which only the website shows. Do not create your own Minute account, and stop using the old @supply.claru.ai login: recordings sent through it after October 12 may not be reviewed or paid.

  8. 8

    Record to the brief

For the Latin America Residential Egocentric project, recordings must be landscape, at least 2 minutes long, filmed from a head-mounted phone, show natural household activities and keep both hands visible for at least 95% of the clip. Every project's Getting Started Guide lists its own rules.

  9. 9

Wait for review, then get paid on Tuesday

Videos are usually reviewed within 2 to 3 business days, not always in order, and only approved videos are paid. Videos approved before each week's cutoff are paid that Tuesday; later approvals roll into the next week.

Claru project qualification (some project types only)

Claru has no single entry test. Some projects, currently Activities Video and External Video Recording, are locked until you pass a short qualification. For some, your quiz answers decide the result; for others, such as Activities Video, the quiz is optional and an automated quality check of your sample video decides. Other projects are open on invitation or once you meet their requirements, and every recording you submit is then reviewed before it is paid.

Format

A short multiple-choice quiz, usually five questions answered one at a time, taking about 10 minutes, plus a short sample video recorded in the Claru app for some project types. Scored automatically the moment you submit; sample videos take a few minutes and come back with written feedback if they need changes. Retakes are free and unlimited, and a pass keeps that project type unlocked unless Claru revokes it.

How to prepare

  • Open the project's Instructions (the button in the assessment dialog) and read the brief before you start the quiz.
  • Check the project's Phone Requirements card first: an unsupported phone is a hard block, and newer models are only accepted if listed.
  • Record the sample video exactly as the on-screen rules say: steady, well lit, unobstructed, with your hands visible while you handle objects.
  • Film natural, purposeful activity rather than staged movements, and avoid long idle stretches or the same motion over and over.
  • Read any written feedback on a failed sample, fix that one thing and upload again; retakes cost nothing.

Why people get rejected

  • Poor lighting, blurry footage, a blocked camera or too much shaking.
  • Hands not visible while interacting with objects.
  • Staged or unnatural behavior, long periods of inactivity or excessive repetitive movement.
  • Recording while seated when the task requires movement, or filming people without the required permission or consent.
  • Using a chest mount instead of the required head mount, or recording upside-down or vertical video, which can get your Minute account disabled.
  • Using a VPN or recording from a country the project does not accept, which can lead to a permanent suspension.
How long it takes

Claru publishes no time from sign-up to a first project, and a profile does not guarantee a match. Once you record, videos are usually reviewed within 2 to 3 business days, but some stay Pending longer while its review partner runs extra checks; Claru asks you to wait until a video has been Pending for 10 days before contacting support. Approved videos are paid in the next Tuesday cycle after the weekly cutoff.

When you get paid

Claru pays only for approved work, every Tuesday and automatically (there is no manual withdrawal), by bank transfer handled by Trolley to an account in your own name that accepts international payments. You need at least $50 in approved earnings; a smaller balance rolls over to the next week. Money usually arrives 1-4 business days after processing, first payments can take longer, and a returned payment may cost a $10 reprocessing fee. PayPal and Payoneer are not supported, and Claru cannot pay through Airtm.

Tips to get accepted

  • Make sure your full name, tax ID and date of birth match exactly in Claru and at your bank, and that the account can receive international payments. Digital wallets such as Mercado Pago or Wise may reject Claru's transfers, so a traditional bank account is safer.
  • Never use a VPN or pick a country you do not live in. Claru says false location information or bypassing location rules may get your account permanently suspended.
  • Record only under the Claru account and organization shown on your project page. If you recorded under the wrong Minute account and have fewer than 5 approved hours, Claru cannot transfer those recordings.
  • Do not delete and recreate your Minute profile if videos seem stuck: it breaks the link to videos pending review, and they stop moving for good.
  • On classification tasks, open a task only when you can finish it: it is reclaimed about an hour after you open it. Reject a defective item (paid) rather than Skip it (unpaid, and the pay on that item is forfeited).
  • Check the rate on the project page before you record. Pay changes: the Residential Egocentric base rate is $5/hour for uploads from October 9, 2026, with boosted tasks paying up to $10/hour, and milestone bonuses ended on September 9, 2026.

What isn't public

  • Claru does not publish how profiles are matched to projects, how long a match takes, or how many applicants get work. Its own FAQ says a profile does not guarantee a match, a start date, an amount of work or payment.
  • Its own pages disagree on how you are paid. Its video-capture job pages (posted May 2026) say US recorders are paid by ACH every two weeks and Latin American and Asian recorders by Wise or Payoneer, while its help center says payments run every Tuesday through Trolley and that PayPal and Payoneer are not supported. This guide follows the help center. Its contract also allows up to 60 days after acceptance to pay.
  • Rates differ between its pages. Job pages list $15/hr for US capture, $10 for Canada, $6-$7 for Latin America and $5 for Asia, but the help center set the Residential Egocentric base rate at $5/hr from October 9, 2026, and the commercial workplace project pays $10 per approved hour. Each project's page is the only reliable rate.
  • Screening for expert evaluation roles (math, legal, coding, red teaming) is not documented. The job pages give requirements and hourly ranges, but the help center covers recording, classification and review tasks, not how experts are vetted.
  • Bans on the Minute recording app are decided by the Minute team. Claru says it cannot see the reason, cannot ask for a review and cannot restore access, and it does not publish who runs Minute or how to appeal.
  • Worker feedback is thin: we found no Trustpilot profile for claru.ai on 15 October 2026, and the only public reviews we could read were a handful on Apple's App Store.
